August News
Have you all heard that saying ‘no news is good news’….?
Well, here is the good news in the form of this long awaited letter. It has been a long time coming simply because the Committee of Friends did not know whether or not to throw in the towel and close! Yes, we really were at a low ebb earlier this summer……however it wasn’t as simple as that, we had to hold a Special Meeting in order to determine the future of Friends….
Fortunately those members who came to the special meeting took it upon themselves, after considerable discussion, to vote that Friends should continue! So here we are, very pleased to have that vote of confidence, and we are determined to be successful.
At the Special Meeting we were very pleased to welcome Mr John Walker (recently moved to the East Coast, no less) who gave us his unstinting advice and support, so much so that he has agreed to come onto the Committee – which for us is brilliant – his experience and understanding of matters parochial are excellent and we hope to benefit from his good advice.
We appeared at the Farsley Festival where we received friendly interest and a new membership. Wasn’t that just a brilliant day for everyone in the community?
We have some dates for your diary – Table Tops sales - 3rd October and 7th November – watch out for more…. additionally By popular request – the repeat appearance of the Brass Band from Drighlington on 31 October in the afternoon. We will be holding this in the church which gives itself to such occasions beautifully – we can all have a look around – and there is plenty of space in which to serve refreshments – Wine and savouries seemed to go down a treat and the same will be served on this occasion. It was a great success and the music sounded truly wonderful. Please do come and bring friends, it’s a smashing occasion – absolutely everybody said so last year so we hope for a repeat.
Additionally we are hoping to have the windows surveyed in order to have some idea/figures on which we can work – more on that later when we have the information.
We on the committee would sincerely like to see membership of Friends grow – not only to swell the fundraising potential, but to join together with members of the community – not necessarily churchgoers - to help us protect and preserve the building and all it stands for…… community, stability, a sense of history… After all - it is always there – every photograph of the High Street contains a view of the church – and, as English Heritage asks “What would a village be without its church?” So please encourage your friends and family to join us – not much effort is required!!
Would you please send your membership renewals, we didn’t ask earlier because of the uncertainty – we would like to ask you now!
With all good wishes from Veronica Lovell, Chair
